Engineering and Manufacturing

1.    Overview

The industry of manufacturing consits of Precision engineering, Electronics, Chemicals, Biomedical Sciences and Aerospace.

The precision engineering sector is a key enabler for Singapore’s high-value manufacturing, contributing to 10% of Singapore’s manufacturing output and a quarter of the total manufacturing workforce. The Government has embarked on initiatives to upgrade and train the Precision Engineering talent pool which signal demand for skilled manpower.

The electronics industry is the key to the manufacturing sector employing approximately 19% of manufacturing jobs. The industry was also the largest contributor to Singapore’s 2010 GDP from the manufacturing sector which attracted S$5.8billion of Fixed Asset Investment. This pipeline of investments is expected to create more than 2,600 new skilled jobs when fully implemented.

The chemicals industry remains a key pillar of manufacturing with high growth potential. The gradual rebound in the end markets such as automotive, construction, electronics, and pharmaceutical markets signifies bright spots for the Chemicals industry.

The biomedical sciences (BMS) industry of Singapore is engaged in a wide range of activities, including R&D, drug discovery, medical technology innovation and manufacturing. Its manufacturing output is estimated to hit S$25 billion by 2015, targeting to employ 15,000 people by the year 2015.

Singapore is a regional leader in aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), manufacturing, as well as research and development (R&D). The prospects are bright for the aerospace sector which projects an increase in direct manpower requirements of about 6,300 from 2010 till 2015.
