Engineering and Construction

Overview:

Oman’s construction and engineering sector is one of the most actively inflating industries in Oman, accounting for about 6% of construction and infrastructure projects among the GCC countries as of April 2014. The country has construction programmes worth $150bn planned or underway, and has awarded contracts worth $6bn-$8bn over the past nine years – making it one of the most stable markets in the region – with the value of spending expected to increase thanks to major projects planned.

In 2013, the government of the Sultanate of Oman announced that the country would spend over $50bn in infrastructure and construction projects over the next 15 years, with around $20bn spent on the transport sector, including the Oman National Railway.

The construction and engineering job market is therefore brimming with opportunities, as the state’s current main focus is to increase the number of local labour and recruiting more members of the workforce as a part of the government’s Ominisation policy.

Societies:

Networking is one of the most important ways to get a high standard job, and joining a society is the most professional way of doing so. The Oman Society of Engineers in Muscat is a non-governmental and non-for-profit organisation established in 2001 for engineers in the country. Most importantly, it offers opportunities for a membership as long as the candidate has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a reputable university. This ensures that fresh graduates can have a fair chance of joining the society.
