Overview:
Oman’s oil and gas industry plays a massive role in the country’s economy. The sector is by far Oman’s largest, and is continuing to grow over time. With a daily production of over 943,000 barrels of crude oil, the industry is finding new ways to meet the huge demand for oil. In recent years, the Omani government implemented a new program to boost oil output as a result of the increasing demand, which in turn has led to more job openings within the sector.
Employees in the oil and gas industry are mostly qualified mechanical, or chemical engineers as well as geology or geochemistry graduates. Other scientific disciplines, such as physics and chemistry are also well represented throughout. There is work offshore on rigs, on ships, on FPSO’s; and onshore at terrestrial wells or at company headquarters as well as research and development hubs.
In order to be eligible for a technical career in the Oil and Gas industry, it is preferable to have studied the following disciplines at university:
Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Physics, Safety and Environmental Engineering, Mathematics, Materials Engineering.
