Description

Wan Amirul Adlan Bin Wan Fadzil Adlan is a Senior Games Journalist at Nmia Gaming based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He graduated in 2020 with a degree in Media and Journalism.

"There are more games than ever releasing every week, and my job is to dive into it and tell a bunch of people on the internet which ones I like, as well as tell the stories of the people working in this industry."

What do you most like about your job?

It’s a job that definitely rewards passion. Games are a huge time sink and being able to walk out of them with critical thoughts instead of just coasting on elation is a good feeling, especially when you can turn that into stories or opinions to share with the community.

Considering how much of social media is designed to peddle negativity, a well-spirited games journalist has a lot of power to push that back by simply going “today we’re going to talk about a game that I actually like”.

It has its drawbacks, sure, but on those days where everything hits right there’s no better feeling.

How did a UK qualification help you to get this job?

A qualification is like a good smoky eyeliner- for the right people it will absolutely get their attention. Other than that, the actual quality of the education I received on my Media and Journalism degree allows me to make work that I can be proud of. Journalism is more than just putting words together, it’s making those words hold up to a standard, and I’m glad my education gave me an idea of where those standards should be.

What key advice would you give to current international students looking to get into a similar career to yours?

Start solo and build up a good portfolio. And I don’t mean start as in “have a google doc full of drafts”. Put it out there for the world to see. Nothing builds a personal style like dealing with your own swarm of annoying comments.

Also definitely have non-game interests as well. If you’re specifically looking to get into games, you won’t believe how much better your work is once you expand your internal library. More importantly it lets you also build your own style- as someone who’s had to interview applicants nothing put me off more than feeling like someone was just parroting their favorite streamers.
