Angela Chen is a Chinese-English Interpreter with the Foreign Affairs Office in the Guangzhou Municipal Government. Below she talks about her career and how she accomplished her goals, and gives you advice on how to be successful in your future.
What do you do?
I am an interpreter for diplomatic meetings. I translate documents from Chinese to English accurately. I also accompany international exchange programmes as the interpreter and coordinator. I also liaise with governments from our sister cities such as Sydney, Australia and promote Guangzhou′s interest in international organisations such as United Cities and Local Government.
Why do you think you got this job?
I am able to communicate fluently and accurately in English (written and verbal) and I had good academic performance in university. I also have the ability to work well under pressure.
What key advice would you give to current students from China who would like to get into a similar job to you?
As the saying goes "as an interpreter, you need to know something of everything and everything of something".
