Description
Satvinder Saini is a Project Director for Excel Construction Ltd in Jinja, Uganda (also a keen rally driver). Below he talks about his career and how he accomplished his goals, and gives you advice on how to be successful in your future.
What do you do?
As a Projects′ Director, my work involves liaising with clients, consultants, various ministries in the Government for whom we carry out Projects ... the list is endless!
It also involves receiving and responding to reports from our Projects staff who report to directly to me, monitoring work progress on all projects (currently about 37). It is hard at times but with good organisational skills and the right team of people to work with, it doesn′t get to your head.
Why do you think you got this job?
I joined my father′s company after graduating in Construction Management - some might say ′typical Indian mentality′, but I am proud of my achievements.
Our company′s turnover has increased to $30M from 2005 when it was $5M, plus we are looking at joint ventures with bigger construction companies for bigger works, not just in Uganda but the rest of Africa and I am pleased to say it is going well.
What key advice would you give to current students from India who would like to get into a similar job to you?
Attend your lectures regardless - trust me it helps. I still use notes from my lecture for presentations to MNC clients and they work.
What other advice would you give to others graduates?
Feel free to interact with your professors, tell them about your goals and ask their advice for your problems if you have any. Personally - I won’t forget our field trip to Barcelona!
