I currently manage a portfolio of over 400 high net worth customer relationships, focused on ensuring continuous growth and maintaining high service standards. My key responsibilities include increasing wallet share with HSBC by maintaining an effective cross-sell ratio and actively bringing in new customers to sustain a profitable portfolio.

I am committed to upholding the Global Premier Brand by delivering on its promises and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards to safeguard the bank from potential losses. I cross-sell various personal banking products and services, including insurance and wealth management solutions, while developing a deep understanding of each client’s financial needs, objectives, and risk appetite. This allows me to offer innovative wealth management solutions tailored to their requirements. Additionally, I am well-versed in the Premier Proposition, including Global Service Standards and Premier International, to provide comprehensive and consistent service.

What do you most like about your job?

What I most enjoy about my job is the opportunity to engage directly with clients, delving into their financial needs and helping them overcome challenges on their path to success. I find great satisfaction in guiding them through complex situations and contributing to their financial achievements. Additionally, I thrive on collaborating with my colleagues, especially during challenging times. Working together which is one of our core values harnesses our collective creativity and diverse perspectives, which is incredibly rewarding, particularly in an international bank with a broad global reach.

How did a UK qualification help you to get this job?

Pursuing my MBA with a UK qualification significantly advanced my career in multiple ways. Initially, I was impressed by the well-structured and engaging curriculum, which not only bolstered my academic knowledge but also honed my professional skills. The program’s emphasis on communication greatly enhanced my ability to articulate key business messages clearly and confidently, whether in writing or during interviews. This improvement in communication skills was instrumental in my career growth.

During my studies, Sri Lanka faced a severe economic crisis that transformed the job market. The insights and skills I gained from my MBA allowed me to approach this crisis with a leadership mindset. I was able to analyze and address the challenges effectively and developed a comprehensive understanding of core business and marketing functions. This strategic perspective enabled me to stay ahead in a rapidly changing environment.

Ultimately, the knowledge and skills acquired from my UK qualification played a crucial role in my career achievements. Notably, they contributed to my recognition as the only Sri Lankan recipient of the prestigious HSBC Group’s Circle of Excellence Award in 2023, which was celebrated at the global event in Jaipur, India.

What key advice would you give to current international students looking to get into a similar career to yours?

Invest actively in every aspect of your curriculum; each detail matters and can yield significant returns in your personal and professional life. The best investment you can make is in yourself and pursuing a UK qualification like an MBA is a valuable step. The global and local job markets are evolving rapidly, so focus on skill-based assessments and evaluations to stay ahead. Take full advantage of the personal development programs offered by your university to acquire new skills and prepare for future challenges.

In addition to leveraging your MBA, emphasize building strong communication and interpersonal skills. Gain practical experience through internships or part-time roles in finance or client-facing positions. Networking extensively is crucial, as is understanding diverse cultural perspectives and financial products. These efforts will be key to delivering exceptional client service and advancing in your career.
