Description

My current job role is linked to the Risk and Reputation office at Deloitte Sri Lanka and Maldives. Where I report to the Risk and Reputation Partner on business relationships evaluation process by adhering to the company conflicts and independence policies and check on certain independence restrictions or prohibitions for entering/changes/renewals/continuations of business relationships with a restricted entity.

I also provide assistance/guidance on matters related to Risk and Independence to engagement team and consult with the regulators and the global teams on compliance activities. In addition, I am also a part of the quality review team who conducts compliance tests for the business units in order to ensure everything is in accordance with the Deloitte global standards.

What do you most like about your job?

What makes me love my job is the work with which I am involved. I support business units in moving forward with their engagements by guiding them with their independence and risk concerns. Hence, every day I wake up to a set of new challenges which involves collaborating with colleagues from various business units at the firm and across the world on the cases and reviewing the risk involved and providing solutions to them.

Therefore, whenever I get to onboard a business relationship after clearing the related risk concerns or when I get solve other risk concerns which had been problematic to the business units makes me feel satisfied and also being surrounded by an amazing team makes this job easier.

How did a UK qualification help you to get this job?

The job I am currently at is related to providing financial services such as audit and assurance, consulting, financial advisory, risk advisory, tax and related services. Moreover, the job I am involved is where I must make some critical decisions related to risk and independence of the clients, engagements and business relationships which plays a significant role given that a single negligent decision could negatively affect the firm's reputation.

The MSc. at UWE gave me the technical knowledge and the inclusive understanding that needed also the course included with a diverse range of subjects which covered the accounting and finance field and the challenging assignments helped to increase my soft skills and practical thinking and teamwork.

It also helped me to get to know individuals from accounting and finance industry in various positions so I could get a clear picture of the industry.

What key advice would you give to current international students looking to get into a similar career to yours?

The advice I give is to work hard to broad your knowledge and skills during your course and do not limit into one area of interest but to various areas within the industry as in the modern world there are countless opportunities as the technology plays a huge role in all the careers right now.

I know most of the international students’ dream is to settle down in UK/Europe once they complete their course successfully. However many of them do not get an opportunity of what they are looking for, I would suggest and encourage you to try opportunities not just in UK or overseas but in your home country as well.  UK qualifications have a strong reputation worldwide, so you could apply for a job at your interest and gain an appropriate level of experience so that in future you can apply for a more stable role at a reputed company overseas for an attractive compensation. This way you can help your country’s economy to boost and have a successful life as well.

Additionally, a tip from me, whenever you get shortlisted for an interview be as much as prepared you can like, do your own research of the company their future, how does the current role will assist them to achieve their goals etc. and always be yourself during interviews, as employers like to get to know the authentic “You”.
