Please give a brief description of your job and what it involves:

My overall career encompasses more than 8 years of professional experience after I came back finishing my MBA from UK. I am currently holding the position of Head Engagement & Learning at Airtel Bangladesh Ltd. Previously, I was working as Deputy General Manager(DGM)- HR in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka. Also, I have worked as Lead Training & Development in BSRM Group of Companies, the country’s largest steel manufacturing conglomerate, and in GlaxoSmithKline Bangladesh Ltd. as Manager, Training & Administration under Human Resources Department.

Throughout my career, I have been actively involved with a number of HR roles ranging from HR, OD, Recruitment, L&D, IR, SHE to factory administration. Previous to GSK, I used to be a university lecturer and a freelance trainer facilitating training and consultancies for a number of educational institutions and universities. I am still involved in this process, and a keen researcher in relevant fields linking HR to practical demands in the industry.

Academically I possess an MBA from London Metropolitan University (UK) and a Bachelors degree in Computer Science & Engineering from Premier University, Chittagong. I am a GSK certified L1 Auditor and a certified Trainers Trainer by ILO- TVET & EU. I am also a member and co-founder of HR Forum, a Chittagong based voluntary organization facilitating people development.

Why do you think you got this job e.g. what skills/knowledge/experience etc.?

Having an MBA from UK helped me tremendously to make up my mind in pursuing a career in HR. It has also given me the multicultural experience that has taught me to respect individuals’ uniqueness and difference, which is a much needed skill in Human Resource management. The emphasis on realistic learning by my course instructors was also something that got me interested in to pursuing career building opportunities around future learning manger/executives role. My current role allows me to spend ample amount of time in learning new things that are relevant to the business, and then delivering to other employees. Hopefully in future I will be pursuing a PhD in Human Resources arena- the intention for which started growing while I was doing research as part of my MBA dissertation in UK.

What key advice would you give to current students who would like to get into a similar job to you?

My first advice to any student studying abroad would be to grasp any opportunity in meeting and experiencing multicultural interventions starting from group study to partying! Take maximum benefit out of the fact that you are pursuing a global degree, enabling you to think and act as a citizen of the globalized world. UK universities are also known for their rich collection of books and other learning materials along with a strong notion of community activities (student communities, volunteer groups, common study interests), which can also help a perspective graduate to enhance interpersonal skill levels. Do not confined yourself only in studying and part-time work, but do enjoy your time and learn in that process automatically!
