New Afton Mine

Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Position Reports To: Tailings Dam Safety Engineer in Training 

Position Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Survey Technician at our New Afton Mine for surface surveying. The surface surveying position will monitor and measure instruments and key infrastructure to support Tailings and Surface Operations.

Key Responsibilities

The role will join the Tailings and Surface Technical team providing critical information to the safe operation of the Tailings Storage Facilities. The position will work with both operations and technical personnel with key responsibilities including:

  • Establishing, checking, adjusting, and maintaining geodetic and local survey control networks
  • Setting out reference points, lines, areas, and design criteria
  • Measuring asset and topographic features
  • Performing layout such as sighting in a drill
  • Establishing and maintaining automated and manual topographic and infrastructure monitoring programs
  • Performing and processing site photogrammetry utilizing UAV technology
  • Measuring and calculating areas and volumes of various surfaces and materials  
  • Drafting and maintenance of asset and topographic maps for various departments

Qualifications

Required:

  • Safety-focused and Team oriented
  • Minimum two-year Geomatics Engineering Technologist Diploma or other relevant Engineering Technologist or Technician Diploma.
  • Minimum of 2 years of earthworks survey experience or 5 years of total survey experience
  • Total Station and GNSS surveying experience
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Strong MS Office skills

Preference will be given to candidates that have:

  • Previous experience working in the mining industry
  • Experience in a QA and or QC role
  • Experience with construction layout
  • Experience with Leica survey gear
  • Experience using Geodetic post-processing software e.g., Leica Infinity, LGO/TGO, Trimble Access
  • Experience using CAD software e.g., Deswik, Vulcan, AutoCAD, MineCAD, Promine
  • Experience using GIS apps e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo, Global Mapper
  • Familiarity with monitoring & change detection suites e.g., GeoMoS, ALERT, EmbankNET
  • Experience operating commercial UAVs and has Advanced Operations – Pilot Certificate

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements

Compensation

The anticipated salary for this position will be between $68,000 to $80,000.  A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided.  This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
