Ironically, there is a bright side to cyber-crime, and it seems to have come in the form of a burgeoning cyber-security sector.
This spells good news for cyber-security and engineering graduates, as the rising threat of hackers has resulted in a huge demand and sizeable job market.
The pervasive nature of cyber-criminals, combined with widespread under-recruitment in the sector, means that graduates returning home to India will be returning to “highly lucrative offers”, reports the Times of India. According to industry experts, each graduate has an average of five job offers waiting for them – now that’s a ratio we can get behind.
Sundeep Kumar Makthala, founder of Telangana Information Technology Association (TITA), commented in The Times of India recently: “Even start-ups are recruiting cyber security professionals. The demand for data security is being raised by clients. Thus, the demand for cyber security engineers is growing exponentially.”
Despite increasing levels of automation, there is nothing like having professional human talent on board to help fight this rising cybersecurity risk.
A senior official in a top IT company confirmed this: “No amount of automation can substitute the physical presence of a cyber security expert in companies. Since cyber threat is ever changing and ever evolving, be it in the form of malware or virus, it needs to be looked out for constantly.”
But it is not just the long-term career prospects that are proving attractive. Cyber-security engineers can also enjoy an enviable salary. For recent graduates, the starting salary ranges from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.6 lakh.
"Going by the hiring trend at our college, five to 10 jobs are being offered to students who have a core area expertise in cyber security. The demand for professionals in online vigilance, cyber security and big data analytics has easily trebled up in the last year," said A Govardhan, dean of JNTU School of Information Technology.
Judging by recent figures, 2,000-3,000 engineering students – who study cyber security either as a core course or as an optional course – are set to graduate in Hyderabad alone this year.
