It’s that time of year where across the UK and the rest of the world, applicants have now secured their places at their university of choice and are eagerly awaiting the first term of university. For international students, there are a few extra things to consider. There may be an element of culture shock when arriving in the UK, and while finding a graduate role may seem like a long way off there are several things that you can do when starting your first year of university that will help you to increase your skills ready for graduation and your new graduate job.
When walking around campus or looking online, have a look at what services your university provides. You may have already spoken to the immigration team before arriving, but do you know where to find the careers team? Their expertise can help you at each stage of your degree. Once you’ve settled into your first year, give them a visit to see how you could increase your skills while studying. This could be in the form of work experience, an internship during the summer or volunteering. By doing this, you’ll be able to refer to what skills you have and tangible examples to share when you get to your first interview. Does your institution have a Global Centre or team that supports international students and puts on cultural events to promote networking? If so, have a look at what they offer as their offerings are likely to have been created with international students in mind and will help you adapt to life in the UK.
As a student arriving in a new country, it’s important to build your network for many reasons. Firstly, alongside studying you want to feel at home in the UK, so try to meet new people when given the opportunity. There are societies, sports clubs and Global Centre’s where it’s possible to meet new people while widening your experiences. Not only that, but it’s also useful to be able to refer employers to examples where you built on teamwork, communication skills and other skills useful for the working world.
