Malaysia to Strengthen Child Care System to Promote Women′s Employment

According to a report from the Nanyang Siang Pau, a newspaper based in Malaysia, Vice-Minister of the Department of Malaysian Women, Family and Social Development Chou Meifen said that more attention will be paid to the registration issues facing nurseries and day-care centers, so that mothers will be able to go to work without worrying about their children.

Chou Meifen said at a conference, "Some families hire maids to serve as babysitters, so that mothers can go to work. However, in my opinion, the best way is to improve the system of nurseries and day-care centers."

Chou pointed out that there are a lot of nurseries and day-care centers in Malaysia, but most of them are not registered to the welfare department because of the high cost, and for the next step, they will discuss how to reduce the cost so as to encourage more operators to register.

Chou added that if some nurseries shut down due to licensing issues, it will affect more women going back to the workplace, so that the government must take the issue seriously.
