Swire Management Trainee Programme

Swire′s long and successful history, spanning back almost 198 years, has been built on the strength of its dedicated, highly professional team of talented people. That is why Swire has always placed great emphasis on the training and personal development of its staff.

Group Staff Programme

Successful applicants to the Swire Group Staff Management Trainee Programme will be employed by the parent company John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Limited and seconded to one of our operating companies for a period of three years, with a view to developing professional skills and paving the way to a successful future career in a particular field. We carefully consider a trainee′s interests, preferences, personality and other indicators when determining the business stream to which they will be seconded.

Training will primarily take place in Hong Kong and Mainland China. After completing the three-year training programme, trainees may be relocated to Mainland China, or other regions during their career.

During the application process, the Group Staff Management Trainee Programme allows applicants to state their preference in respect of the Swire division they are most interested in joining. Prospective applicants are encouraged to research the industry characteristics of Swire′s different divisions before making a choice.

Application Requirements

Successful applicants must:

  • Have PRC citizenship or Right of Abode in Hong Kong SAR*;
  • Hold a recognised university degree in any discipline;
  • Possess an excellent command of written and spoken Chinese and English, with a credit or above in either HKCEE English (Grade 4), CET Level 6 or TEM Level 4, or an equivalent standard;
  • Not have worked in a full-time capacity for more than three years;
  • Be willing to be relocated to Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and other countries for long- or short-term assignments.

House Staff Programme

Every year, the London-based head office of the Swire group recruits a small number of graduates for a career overseas. The hallmark of this demanding and highly rewarding programme is global mobility. Management Trainees in the House Staff Programme are obliged to work wherever the company requires and occasionally need to move at short notice from one business or location to another.

Most initial assignments are for 1-2 years. As the House Staff Trainees become more senior, their assignments tend to last 2-3 years, becoming progressively longer the more senior the position. As a result, there is little likelihood of monotony and, during the course of their careers, the House Staff Trainees can expect to come into contact with many different parts of the Swire group′s interests.

There are approximately 100 House Staff Trainees currently working around the globe, in places as varied as Hefei, Port Moresby, Douala, Dubai and Singapore, and in all areas of the group′s activities.

Assignments are typically generalist in nature and the House Staff Trainees are expected to contribute from day one, coping with unexpected challenges in unfamiliar surroundings. Our experience shows that, through exposure to different industries and locations, the House Staff Trainees build up outstanding general management skills.

Such a job is not for everyone. We are looking for candidates who are interested in joining us for the long term, who are truly adventurous and who do not have a particular preference for the industry they would like to join. If you are excited by the thought of a well-travelled and highly diverse general management career, then you may be the right person for us.

Successful applicants to the House Staff Management Trainee Programme will be employed by John Swire & Sons Overseas Limited and seconded to one of the Swire group′s operating companies for an initial period of three years, with a view to developing their professional skills and paving the way for a successful career as a generalist.

Application Requirements

Successful applicants must:

  • Be prepared to accept assignments in any role or location that is requested;
  • Have a minimum of 320 UCAS points or international equivalent;
  • Have, or be expecting, a first undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2.1;
  • Have fluent written and spoken English; other language skills, such as Putonghua, would be an advantage.
