Attractive scholarships awaiting worthy candidates
KUALA LUMPUR: Starting out a career with Gamuda Berhad opens up a new world of possibilities where talents soar. The Malaysia’s leading infrastructure group is nurturing a pool of ambitious young talents, relating to the infrastructure and township development, from fresh graduates to senior engineers and the likes.
The Gamuda Scholarship 2015 is your pathway to seeking career advancement in a dynamic and supportive environment, where talents are exposed to large-scale and iconic projects such as the country’s first Mass Rapid Transit project, the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Sg.Buloh-Kajang (SBK Line), Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) (Ipoh-Padang Besar), and the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART Tunnel) project. From scholarship to the internship programme, Gamuda welcomes all aspiring undergraduates with open arms. The success story is being written the very moment you become a scholar of the bonded scholarship programme.
Madhu Shiv and Low Yoke Yen are two of the role models who have been growing together with this well-established corporation even before they graduated. The young and aspiring Madhu Shiv, 26, is one of the scholars who is being groomed to assume key role in the Group. The hard work and dedication of this Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC) graduate in civil engineering paid off handsomely in the end when he was promoted to the position of Senior Civil Engineer for the KVMRT project, beginning this year.
“I was among the 25 granted the scholarship in 2008 and I began my career at Gamuda in 2012 as a graduate engineer for the KVMRT project. I also worked on the EDTP during my 4-month internship and I am presently attached to the Southern Elevated – Project Management Department based in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur,” said Madhu.
“Back in my college days, I was well aware that Gamuda was already a key player in the infrastructure and other types of property development industry. It was such a great honour to me, being granted the scholarship. After completing my internship programme with Gamuda, I set sights on reaching greater heights, knowing that Gamuda has a very supportive environment for me to grow, together with a lot of encouragement, guidance and nurturing from the experts in the industry.”
“The in-house training centre called Gamuda Learning Centre (GLC) plays a key role in ensuring that I am always on the right path to achieving my dreams. The work culture at Gamuda is one of the priceless things that I treasure most. Being surrounded by a group of colleagues and superiors who hold knowledge-sharing in high esteem, the sense of belonging is truly heartfelt. We work as a team as we grow together. This is what sets Gamuda apart from the others,” he said.
“What is worth mentioning here is its own Mentoring and the Understudy Programme, in which Gamuda takes pride in grooming and inculcating good values such as leadership in them. Continuous efforts are in place to nurture its employees through a structured way.”
Commenting on the single most valuable asset he gained from being absorbed into the Gamuda family, Madhu said: “Confidence! It’s the confidence that I have piled on over the years. For a big company to have such a single-minded faith in me, I feel really honoured and rest assured that I am going the extra mile to scaling greater heights.”
Reiterating this was Low Yoke Yen, Manager – Design & Technical, Geotechnical Department for the KVMRT project.
“One of the most priceless experiences I have gained would be having met people who encouraged and inspired me to always go further in my pursuit of career advancement. One thing for sure is that Gamuda provides ample room for self-improvement and as long as you put in enough commitment and hard work, more successes await you,” she remarked.
“When you work in such a supportive and engaging environment, you can always play a big role in contributing to the success of the company. Being a female in a generally male-dominated industry, however, I don’t feel like I am at a disadvantage as women are given equal opportunities to grow within the Group. This is what makes Gamuda a very special place to shine. Equip yourself with an honest effort in your line of duty and that’s how you learn and progress, which will ultimately earn you the respect.”
“At Gamuda, there are plenty of opportunities for mentorship and understudying. I have had opportunities to learn directly and indirectly from more senior people across the industry. And with my younger co-workers, I demonstrate leadership by example, formally and informally. I want to make sure they have a target to work on,” she added.
“I have out-served my scholarship bond with Gamuda and decided to stay on, driven by the highly innovative and motivating environment that promotes growth.”
The Gamuda Scholarship started in 1996 and has so far granted 279 scholarships. The main qualities that Gamuda is looking for are leadership skills, positive values and character, and determination to succeed.
East Malaysian candidates who are shortlisted for the workshop and interview at Menara Gamuda in Petaling Jaya will be reimbursed for transportation expenses incurred.
