Program aims to help young people into job market

The Canadian government is helping to equip young people with the skills and work experience needed to enter the labour force.

On Aug. 26, they announced $198,000 in federal funding for a project at Summer Street Industries, designed to help 10 Central Nova residents transition to the job market or go back to school to upgrade their skills.

Specifically, these local participants will gain useful tools such as problem solving and leadership skills. They will benefit from work experience with private-sector employers in areas such as office administration, retail and manufacturing. In addition, each participant will be provided with a job coach to further develop their individual skills.

These investments in youth employment, skills and apprenticeship programs, help connect young Canadians with available jobs and strengthen local economies.

This kind of targeted approach is showing results.

Thanks to our government’s Youth Employment Strategy – which includes funding for the Skills Link program, as well as Career Focus, and the Canada Summer Jobs program – more than 555,000 young people across Canada have received assistance that will not only help economic growth, but provide a brighter future for our young people.

Federal initiatives like the Canada Job Grant; the Apprenticeship Incentive and Completion Grants; as well as tax credits, like the tuition, education and textbook tax credits, tradesperson’s tools deduction and the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit, help youth prepare for their future. Our $100 million apprenticeship loan program alone will also help more than 25,000 people fill key trades jobs. These are investments we are making today, to secure tomorrow′s prosperity.

We will continue to work with local groups and stakeholders to provide the targeted local solutions needed for future growth.
